| The engine is a Beta 10 HP twin cylinder diesel, installed in 1998, driving a three bladed propellor. Engine control is by morse type lever in the cockpit. Engine access is good, both from above via a hatch in the bridge deck and from the front with the companion removed. The engine has always been very easy to start and has ample power for pushing against a head wind and choppy sea if required. Hull speed is easily reached at part throttle and on a calm day the boat will cruise comfortably at 4 1/2 to 5 knots while using about 1/4 gallon per hour. There is a 4 gallon stainless steel fuel tank. With the prop wash from the three blade propeller acting on the rudder and ample power, Scandal is very easy to handle under engine. With her long keel, going astern is a bit of an acquired skill but not too difficult with a little practice. The traditional hull shape means that she is steadier in the water and doesn't get blown around as much as many more modern designs. |
